Photographs, route description and map of a circular walk on the outskirts of Kirkintilloch along the Forth and Clyde Canal and returning alongside the Kelvin River

This is an easy circular three mile walk from Kirkintilloch following the Forth & Clyde Canal, returning via the derelict Broomhill Hospital.
The walk starts from the car park at Lidl's or McDonald's in the town off Milton Street and crosses Glasgow Road at the trafﬁc lights.
It turns left for a short distance then takes a path on the right signed Forth and Clyde Canal ( also a section of the Thomas Muir Trail ) which
leads to a busy road junction. Take care on crossing over the left side of this junction to go round Hillhead Roundabout onto Hillhead Road before heading uphill to take the path on the left just after the Hillhead Canal Bridge trafﬁc lights and drop down onto the Canal tow path.
The walk continues for a short distance along this pleasant, tranquil section of the canal and while on it there is always the possibility that there maybe some boats to see either tied up at the mooring platform or passing by.
At the ﬁrst bend in the tow path and the canal, look out for and take the narrow path on the left to leave the canal and cross diagonally over an open grass area to emerge between houses onto Arran Drive. It then turns right and right again onto Kilsyth Road.
Take care crossing this busy road opposite the railing and enter Broomhill Industrial Estate down a set of steps to pass by the business unit on the left of Ritchie, Mackenzie Co. Ltd.
As the road bends to the right, the walk passes round the metal gate ahead onto a rough vehicle track and at the next bend it continues ahead onto a narrow grass path in an open ﬁeld.
The grass path loops round left in front of trees and the River Kelvin and on the way back passes through the trees to the right onto a wider path junctiun within Broomhill Estate. Turning right the path soon changes to a tarmac track and at the “15mph" sign take the left track to the front of the now derelict building of Broomhill Hospital.
The Hospital was once the villa in Broomhill Estate owned by Robert Bartholomew. The Estate was purchased from Robert Bartholomew through funds raised by a local philanthropist, Beatrice Clugston, and the villa was opened as a hospital in 1876.
The walk follows the driveway from the building and swings round left to pass through the open gates.
Before the top of the hill ahead, the ﬂood protection barrier, it turns right and descends a set of steps.
It passes through a kissing gate and at the end of the path ascends ashort set of steps onto the cycle track for Milton of Campsie.
Turning right, it crosses the footbridge of the River Kelvin where also can be seen the tributary which is the start of the Glazert Water.
Immediately over the footbridge, the walk turns left, passes through a short wood onto a road at the back of Kirkintilloch Industrial Estate.
It continues along this road, turns left onto Milton Road to cross the road bridge over the River Kelvin again and return to the start.
